vibroacoustic therapy

Vibroacoustic therapy (VAT), a technique established in 1968, is a technique that uses low and pure frequency sound vibrations (30-120 Hz) to help the body restore its natural balance.

How does VAT help restore health and balance to the body's systems?

The human body is in a constant state of vibration. The body (atoms, molecules, cells, tissues and organs) are characterised by natural fundamental (natural) vibrational frequencies. In a healthy body, the cooperation between all the systems of the level, atoms, molecules, cells, tissues and organs mentioned above, is in balance and harmonious. Stress, viruses, bacteria, overloads and other harmful external factors disrupt the balance of the body's energy-biological resonance system, leading to immunosuppression and disease. The cooperation of the body's systems becomes disharmonious. Since the vibrational frequencies of the body absorb and emit sound, in case of imbalance, they can be harmonised and returned to their natural state of basic equilibrium - by the low frequency vibrations of the Frenquec sounds offered by Vibroacoustic Therapy. This is thanks to the creation of a common sympathetic resonance system - vibroacoustic sound massage and auditory (musical) stimulus.

Research in radioelectronics has shown that people perceive sound not only with their hearing, but also with their whole body. If for some physiological or psychological reason the vibrating frequencies in the body are out of resonance, then music can act on the body as a "switch" of the vibrating frequencies. (Crowe, 2004, citing Scartelli, 1991, and Koepchen, 1992).

Vibroacoustic therapy is based on this recognition, where music and sound are used as an auditory and vibratory stimulus that is transmitted to the body to achieve physical and psychological therapeutic goals (Wigram & Dileo 1997, cited in Eagle, 1996).

The therapy is based on a multimodal approach, which means that the therapist works with the client's physiological and psychological experience during the session, combining 3 therapeutic components: low frequency sound vibration, music listening (optional) and therapeutic interaction. The combination of these three components allows the client's emotional, cognitive and social problems to be reached, in close connection with bodily functions and sensations, in order to find a solution to them through the therapeutic process. (Punkanen M., Ala-Ruona E. 2012).

This type of therapy can be particularly suitable for those who do not like to talk about themselves, their emotions and feelings, but want to feel better both emotionally and physically.

vibroacoustic therapy helps

The VAT method can help to reduce various symptoms of the disease, both physical and psychological. There has been extensive research worldwide on the potential of the VAT method in neurology, palliative care, gerontology, oncology, pulmonology, immunology, paediatrics and dermatology. The best results of the VAT method are in the treatment of somatoform vegetative disorders (headache, neuroses, sleep disorders, depression, vegetodystonia). It has a rapid effect in the prevention of a wide range of diseases and in ensuring a calm and balanced well-being.

the method is applicable to people of all ages and helps in the following cases

for adults

While we’re frequently sought out for relief from tension, stress, overwork, crises, and sleep disorders, VAT offers support in many other areas.

  1. Ensuring a calm and balanced well-being, general relaxation of the body.
  2. Chronic pain: muscle, back, neck, shoulder, menstrual, headache, migraine, polyarthritis, rheumatism, fibromyalgia.
  3. Various muscular conditions: tension, overload, spasticity, rigidity, etc.
  4. Cerebral palsy in children, multiple sclerosis, rare syndrome.
  5. Stress-related chronic skin diseases (psoriasis, atopic dermatitis).
  6. Respiratory difficulties: asthma, cystic fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
  7. Post-operative rehabilitation: e.g. joint replacement, oedema, etc.
  8. Chronic neurological diseases: Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease.
  9. Sleep disorders.
  10. Eating disorders.
  11. Acute and chronic stress, fatigue, burnout syndrome.
  12. Psychological problems: anxiety, mood swings, behavioural disorders, learning difficulties, etc.
  13. Psychiatric disorders: depression, etc.
  14. Nervous disorders: somatoform autonomic dysfunction, etc.
  15. For relief of menopausal symptoms.
  16. Relief of psychosomatic complaints.

for children

With children, we most often use the VAT method to address conditions like nervous tics or Tourette syndrome, enuresis, sleep disorders, anxiety, as well as cerebral and multiple sclerosis—though it offers support in many other cases as well.

  1. Cerebral palsy in children, multiple sclerosis, a rare syndrome.
  2. Tension headaches.
  3. Twitching.
  4. Nerve tics or Tourette's syndrome.
  5. Enuresis.
  6. Encopresis.
  7. Various psychological disorders (depression, anxiety disorders, sleep disorders, self-injurious behaviour, autism).
  8. Eating disorders.
  9. General relaxation of the body.
  10. And for various functional disorders (relieving various troublesome muscular conditions: tension, overload, spasticity, rigidity, etc.).

Where Does Your Vibroacoustic Therapy Journey Begin

The founder of vibroacoustic therapy is Norwegian therapist and educator Olav Skille (1968). Working with children suffering from severe physical and mental health problems accompanied by symptoms of severe traumatic muscle spasticity, he discovered that low-frequency sound vibration could be used to reduce muscle spasticity and achieve a relaxed state of the whole body. He began to design what he called "sound baths" and in 1982 defined the method as the therapeutic use of sinusoidal (pure, single frequency sound without overtones), low frequency (30-120 Hz) rhythmic, sound-pressure wave and music mixtures. Skille claimed that 'low frequency sound' massage can help to relieve pain, muscle spasticity and other symptoms, including those related to stress (Punkanen M., Ala-Ruona E. 2012, citing Skille O., Wigram T., 1995).

40 Hz would be a frequency to start with. Skille pointed out that 40 Hz could be considered the 'frequency of life' as it seems to be the fundamental frequency for creating balance and optimising bodily functions, acting similarly to a 'reset button'. In addition, frequencies below 40 Hz are also associated with relaxation and general well-being.

vibroacoustic therapy today

Today, vibroacoustic therapy (VAT) is practised worldwide, in the EU, the USA and Canada, in various fields of medicine, healthcare (treatment, rehabilitation, prevention) and social care, with proven effectiveness in research and clinical observation. Vibroacoustic therapy is used worldwide by psychologists, psychotherapists, music therapists, physiotherapists and other medical and healthcare professionals. Vibroacoustic therapy in Latvia is only available in our therapy centre, where vibroacoustic therapy is provided by certified Level 2 vibroacoustic therapy practitioners (medical practitioners and in-patients). The method is approved by the State Medicines Agency.

the method can be used by a wide range of professionals and therapists

Psychologists, psychotherapists, music therapists, physiotherapists and other medical and healthcare professionals work with this method.

Frequently asked questions

how does vibroacoustic therapy work and what I can expect during a session?

The client lies supine on a comfortable vibroacoustic machine, through which low-frequency sound vibrations (30-120 Hz) are transmitted and felt with the whole body. It is a pleasant, undulating and gentle movement, from the feet to the shoulders. This movement is generated by a sound wave that is felt through the surface of the vibroacoustic bed. During the therapy, the aim is to relax and let the sound vibrations vibrate. There are also clients who fall asleep during the session and this is also allowed. The necessary process takes place in the same way.
The therapy is based on a multimodal approach, which means that the therapist works with the client's physiological and psychological experience during the session, combining three therapeutic components: low frequency sound vibration, music listening (optional) and therapeutic interaction. The combination of these three components allows the client's emotional, cognitive and social problems to be closely linked to bodily functions and sensations in order to find a solution through the therapeutic process. (Punkanen M., Ala-Ruona E. 2012).

what is the method based on? what research is it based on?

There has been extensive worldwide research on the potential of VAT in neurology, palliative care, gerontology, oncology, pulmonology, immunology, paediatrics and dermatology. The best results of the VAT method are in the treatment of somatoform vegetative disorders (headache, neuroses, sleep disorders, depression, vegetodystonia). It has a rapid effect in the prevention of a wide range of diseases and in ensuring a calm and balanced well-being. Find more research references here.

HOW DO specialists KNOW WHICH FREQUENCIES ARE SAFE AND CORRECT?

The founder of vibroacoustic therapy Olav Skille pointed out that 40 Hz could be considered the "frequency of life" as it seems to be the fundamental frequency for creating balance and optimising bodily functions, acting similarly to a "reset button". In addition, frequencies below 40 Hz are also associated with relaxation and general well-being. 40 Hz would be the frequency to start with.

How come I am only now learning about this therapy in Latvia?

Although this method is practised all over the world - in the EU, the USA and Canada, it has not been in Latvia for very long. Vibroacoustic therapy is only offered in Latvia in our therapy center. Psychologists, psychotherapists, music therapists, physiotherapists and other medical and healthcare professionals worldwide work with this method based on research and long-term clinical observation.
